Field Codes don't work if manually inserted

In Word 2007, if I try to enter a field code manually, it does not
work: when I use Shift+F9 or Alt+F9, the field code disappears and I get
a blank space instead of the "result".

I am inserting the field code using Ctrl+F9. I think I have the
syntax right; for example, FileName \p to show the file name and path.

I am beginning to think that there may be a corruption in some
registry value or file.

If I insert the field codes via the ribbon (Insert|Quick
Part|Fields), I do not have a problem, but sometimes it's just easier to
do it manually.

What I see missing from this is F9, which is what you need to press to force
the manually typed code to be interpreted (F9 = update field). Press F9 when
the field is first created, then anytime you modify the field and want to
update it.

Herb,

Thank you. That did it. I had (wrongly) assumed the "update field"
in F9 applied only if the data was later changed.

I have your book (Word 2007 Bible). It is excellent.
