footnotes/endnotes

I am working on a document that was once in Wordperfect and is now in Word
(97 but 93 compatible). At one point it had footnotes and I changed them to
endnotes.

Everything used to work fine, but no longer. I could add endnotes and they
had the correct number and the format was the same Now when I try to add an
endnote in the midst of endnotes before it and endnotes after

1. The endnote is numbered "1" not 23 (or whatever is the proper number) and
2. The format of the number for the endnote is different. The other endnotes
at the end of the document have normal size numbers but these are very small
numbers, basically the same size as the superscript number.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

_Maybe_ you can cure the numbering problem by telling Word to convert
all the endnotes to footnotes, and then back again.

As for the reference number size, select all the endnotes and apply
their style to them (so that it'll override the Endnote Reference
style some of the numbers have). Hopefully this won't wipe out any
italics, bold, etc. in the notes. (If it does, just Undo it, and
select the numbers individually.)

Thanks. I tried to convert to footnotes and they wouldn't convert. I think
that this might be because it used to be in Word Perfect, although that
doesn't make sense either, since I used to be able to add additional
endnotes. I may end up redoing all the footnotes. I think there are about 40
of them. Sigh.

Maybe some of them aren't real endnotes, but are numbered paragraphs
with cross references to their numbers?

Redoing just 40 notes shouldn't be that onerous -- someone here can
probably make you a macro to do it, but it wouldn't take too long to
do it manually:

At each location, Add Footnote; using Split Screen, Drag'n'drop the
note content from the old endnote to the new footnote; Delete the
endnote's text reference. (If the endnote doesn't vanish, you know it
wasn't a real endnote, but a cross-referenced paragraph.)

Thanks again - This forum is really helpful.

I am quite sure they are real endnotes because that's how they were created.
I'll go through the document as you suggest, although I'm not sure how to set
up the split screen to two different parts of the same document. How is that
done?

Just above the top of the vertical scroll bar (on the right) is a
horizontal band. If you put your cursor on it, it changes to a
complicated one with up and down arrows. Drag downward and your window
splits into two views of the document. Then you can scroll the lower
one to where the endnotes are and the upper one to where your
footnotes will go.

There's also a menu/ribbon command, but you have a very old version of
Word, so maybe it doesn't have it!
