Formatting citation and reference numbers in Word 2003

I am using Word 2003 and I need to use the Insert Footnote function to add
endnotes to a document. I need the format for the citation in the text to be
in parentheses at the baseline (1). In the reference list, I need the number
to appear with a period 1. Should I use styles; if so, how do I set these
preferences?

there's no way to set this with a built-in, predefined way.

If you're going to use the standard endnote facility, you can start by
adjusting the default character style "Footnote Reference" to not
"superscript."

Adjusting Word to insert the parentheses and period for you needs VBA,
along the lines of:

I want the numbers in my footnotes not to be superscripted, and I want
the numbers to be followed by a dot and a tab

An entirely different approach would be to setup the Endnote list as
ordinary text in a unique, numbered style. For the reference, you insert
the parentheses manually, and a cross-reference on the numbered instance.
