How do I clear project (and task) start and finish dates?

E

Ebeth

I am a first time user and keyed in project (and task) start and finish dates
for all tasks before I realized the software would do it for me. Now I can't
figure out how to clear those fields without deleting the tasks and starting
over. Please help.

First make sure there are predecessor/successor relationships among the
correct tasks. It is usually considered sinful to place predecessors or
successors on summary level tasks.

What happened when you keyed in dates is that Project created some
additional constraints for you such as "Start No Earlier Than" or "Finish No
Earlier Than". You want all these to be "As Soon As Possible" which is the
default.

Assuming you have correct linking logic, I would insert the column
"Constraint Type" by clicking Insert/Column... select "constraint type"
from the drop down. Click OK.

Click on the top of the "constraint type" column to highlight all the
contents. Then click Edit/Clear/Contents

The inserted column may be hidden by right clicking on the column header and
selecting hide column.

That should set you back to driving the logic with your predecessors.

Hi Ebeth,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

OR: in the Gantt Chart view, click the select all button - the unnamed
button just above the ID column, this should highlight all tasks. Now in
the toolbar, select Project/Task Information/Advanced tab and in the
Constraint Type box, use the drop-down arrow to select As Soon As Possible
and the OK. This probably the simplest way to make global changes to any
data boxes in the Task Information dialog.

[Jim: I'm not greedy - one N will do in my name. Also MVP=Most Valuable
Professional and has nothing to do with Microsoft Parteners :) Thanks for
the link to my tutorials.]

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)
