I have a large list of contacts. I want to be able to type in a few letters
and have the name pop into the "to" box automatically

And I want a pony for my birthday. ;-)

What you're describing exists in OE, not in any version of Outlook, sorry.

OL2000 and prior do not have any form of autocomplete at all - just
autoresolve (as in, you can check names against your contacts
folders/address book after typing a few letters).

OL2002 and up have the same autoresolve feature, but also have
autocomplete - but this does not look up anything in your address book - it
relies only on a cache of addresses you've used before. It's still pretty
darned handy. And you can still use autoresolve - type in JOE in the TO
field, and either toggle to another field & wait or press Ctrl+K or press
the "Check Names" button in the toolbar - it will find all the Joes and ask
you which one you want.
After that, every time you pick Joe, it will offer you a list of
autocomplete suggestions.

Outlook remembers names you typed before, not your Contacts list. To bring up
the Contacts, choose Check Names on the menu bar in the new message.

Thank you Lanwench. That at least helped me to type in part of a name - when
I enter 2 or 3 letters and go to the subject line, it automatically fills it
in now.
I really hope you get your pony.

Great - glad it's working for you.
I really hope you get your pony.
