How do I set a reminder in Microsoft Project 2007

Dave

There's a whole range of options depending on how exactly you want it to
remind you.

You can set deadlines, you can write VBA code to bring up message boxes
when certain key events/dates approach/arrive. It really depends on
what you are asking.

Hi Mike

I am using MS Project 2007 Standard edition.

Under MS Project 2000 you could set a reminder which appeared in Outlook.
The new version has the bell symbol, but it is in the background. I do not
know how to get it to work.

Kind regards

Peter

PS I am not a techi.

Hi Peter,

I don't know. Microsoft discontinued workgroup messaging in Project 2007 in
favour of using Project Pro and server where the bell works. Project 2003
was served via: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818337/en-us. I don't know
whether it's adaptable for use with 2007 though. Maybe someone else knows?

Hi Pete,

There is not a great deal of documentation about the "Set Reminder"
option in Project 2007. In testing on my machine with Outlook 2007 and
Project 2007, the following appeared to work -- after a fashion.
Create the tasks and resources.
When creating the resource, add the email address field to the Resource
sheet and make sure you enter a valid email address.
Assign the resource to the task or tasks.
Display the Tracking toolbar, select the task and click the Set Reminder
button.
It should pop up a Set Reminder dialog box where you can specify how
long before the Start of the task you wish to add the reminder.

The Task is added to the Task List in Outlook 2007. Oddly enough, I get
a message about not being able to set the reminder because the "item is
in a folder that does not support reminders". I can however, add the
reminder manually to the task in the Task List. Sorry, I am unable to
test it using previous releases of Outlook.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks for stepping in, Julie - I have no use for Outlook, so I couldn't
provide an answer :(

Happy to help Mike. I remembered the Set Reminder choice from an
earlier post where Dale stepped in with additional details -- it's
always nice to have multiple sets of eyes on topics :)

Hi there,

I followed these instructions and all looks good until the step - select the
task and click the SetReminder button.

The SetReminder button is not enabled (it is there but greyed out).
What configuration steps are required to enable this?
I am running Project SErver 2007 and Outlook 2003 - is this an issue - does
it need Outlook 2007?

Hello Ben,

Yes, I believe you need Outlook 2007 to be able to use the Set
Reminder feature in Project Professional 2007. However, as you are
using Project Server, I would imagine you would use the Outlook
Add-in, not set reminder. For guidance on using Project Server and
Outlook, I suggest posting to the Project Server newsgroup. A higher
percentage of server folk frequent that newsgroup and they may be able
to offer some better advice than I.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Easiest solution is a cheap Project plug-in called Tap on the Shoulder. Details are available at TapOnTheShoulder.com.

I've used it with Project 2007 and 2010. Simple and effective.

We had high hopes for Tap on the Shoulder, but can't seem to get it to work with MS Project 2007 Pro. Have emailed the company for support, but have yet to receive a reply. (seems they provide no telephone #)

Did you have any installation issues or tips?

Thanks

@J Tam: What version of Windows are you using? Windows 7 works best,
and XP is problematic.

On Project 2007, the menu shows up down at the end of the menu bar, so
it's different than the instructions in the PDF.
