How do I stop WORD looking for a printer?

Every time I close a document there's a long pause before a message appears
to say WORD can't find the printer. That's because the printer is turned off
(because I don't want to print anything) so how can I stop WORD looking for
the printer when I don't want to print anything?

What if you change your default printer from the hardware to a printer
driver of a pdf creator?

Why do you turn off your printer?
