How do you make the background of an croped oval picture transpare

I have a photograph in which I used the elliptical marquee tool on to oval a
persons photograph. When printing this on a colored publisher layout, it
shows the white edges that make up the remaining part of the picture. Can
you please tell me how to remove these white edges so that the color of the
background will show?
