How to overcome multiple download of same email?

I set up two POP3 email accounts and need to leave mail on server. Outlook
downloads the same mail every send/receive. I am using Office XP with service
pack 3. This is a very serious problem since the inbox gets crowded and data
trafic slows down the PC and network!!
