Importing DBX to Outlook

L

Liam

Greetings,

I would appreciate any insight into this dilemma.

The Situation:
Desktop(Outlook 2000) to Laptop (Outlook 2003) email migration.

Problem:
The email files on the desktop are in a .dbx format. Correct me if I am
wrong, but I believe this means that the Desktop was upgraded from Outlook
Express?

I have exported all the email to a temp folder on the Laptop.
This includes a number of folder created by the client.

I have tried to import the messages and folders but was unable to use the
import wizard on Outlook.
I have tried to import them into a "new" instance of OE. This managed to get
the email but not the users unique folders.

Does anyone have any advice?

You are correct. The DBX files are from OE. If these files were
transferred/imported to Outlook then they are probably not current.

I'd recommend copying the PST file from the Desktop unit and then open it in the
Laptop unit. You could then transfer (copy) whatever is needed. I would not
recommend moving the data since the file formats are different between OL2000
and OL2003. (Just a guess here)

A few notes:

1) The PST files contain all of the Outlook data and they may be hidden.
2) Be sure to remove the read-only attribute (if applicable) from the OL2000 PST
file before trying to open it.
3) After the successful transfer of data, close the OL2000 PST file and remove
it from the Laptop.

Thank you for responding wayfarrer,

I did a search for .PST files on the desktop and there were none. I also
made sure that "hidden" files and folders were unchecked in the
Tools-->Folder Options

The only files I can find on the desktop are dbx.
This is strange to me too!

Is Outlook still active on the Desktop? If so, the PST file should be located
here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook

This assumes your using Windows 2000 or XP.
