Keep messages in Inbox

After reading new messages, they vanish after I close them (they do not
appear in the Deleted folder). I recently applied a rule to move all incoming
messages sent by people in my Contacts folder to a new folder (leaving junk
in the Inbox) but I don't think that should produce this result. What
settings might I have inadvertently upset?

View-Current View and make sure that "unread messages" is not your current
view.

Click View>Arracnge By>Current View and make sure "Messages" and not "Unread
Messages" is checked.
