levelling and tasks

Hello,

We are currently working on a project in order to organize our team.

Unfortunately, we have a problem concerning the resources allocation and
the levelling. Indeed, when we are using the levelling in order to avoid
resources overallocation, microsoft project changes the dates by itself.

We tried to link all the tasks together, set up "finish to start" or "must
finish on" constraints plus a milestone but the allocation and the dates are
still wrong. For example, linked tasks that should be finished before the
milestone event are finsishing after the milestone start....

Is the problem due to a wrong priority for each task ?
Should we set up other constraints?

Actually, we would like the levelling to divide the whole duration from all
tasks assigned to resources without changing the dates in order to create a
coherent calendar for each person of the team: is this possible ?

Many thanks for your help,

The team

Hi
By default what MS Project level resources feature resolves overallocation
by delaying or splitting the tasks. this causes the end date to move.

If you do not want the finish date to change then you have to select the
check box which says: level only within available slack.
However this will work provided you have enough slack (the amount of time a
task can slip without affecting the finish date of a project)

Levelling will not divide the whole duration from all task assigned.
This will have to be done manually

Hi Team,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Don't you think Project is trying to tell you something? That you can't
meet your deadlines with the resources you have. You need more resources,
more time or cut some tasks.

Remove all constraints by selecting them all and, in Task Information,
select As Soon As Possible (ie no constraints). This will give you the full
flexibility that Project is designed to give. Where you have specific
deadlines, give the appropriate tasks a Deadline Date in Task Information.
This will put a marker on the Gantt Chart, which, if exceeded, will place a
warning icon in the Information column. If you level, Project will then
tell you what's possible. You will then need to project manage to bring the
tasks to finish within their deadlines. Good luck :)

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)
