The problem you are having is a Windows issue not Outlook but here is the
registry key where that information is stored,
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail. You
can remove all the values under the UnreadMail key and that should fix your
issue. Make sure to backup your registry before deleting anything and you
may want to create a restore point in WinXP just to be safe. If you are not
comfortable working the registry then I would not attempt this without
expert assistance.
