lost folder in PST

lost folders

I had a system crash and my main .PST now only has 2 items in it.

1) The deleted items folder (which is empty)
2) The search folders.

scanpst saw there are 7 folders in the file, yet doesn't repair them.

help!

Did scanpst find errors and try to correct them?
If the file doesn't have the folders you wish, you'll probably need to
restore from a backup of your PST file. I hope you do have a backup - you
should regularly back up all your data.

I was afraid of that.

scanpst did find error and that's when the folder became inaccessible. new
system. Just got my backup installed.

p.s.

what cause PST corruption?

Scanpst made a backup copy of the file - can you open it in Outlook? (file |
open | Outlook data file)

Outlook crashing
File getting too big
Accessing it from a network drive
Act of <insert your deity's name here>

etc.

I tried to access the .bak file and it had the error. made a copy and ran
scanpst and the resulting feile had the error too.

I'm pretty sure that my data, as the file is > 250MB, but according has 2
empty folders.

is there a more robust tool than scanpst?

Did you make a copy of the .bak file as myfile.pst and then try using file |
open .... in Outlook?

That part isn't surprising, as it's scanning the same file, really. Was just
wondering you could open the actual file once, even though we know it has
errors.

Outlook PST files are database files - like nearly any database file, they
keep 'whitespace' in them til compacted. So if you were to compact this file
I suspect you'd see it shrink waaaaay down in size. The file size doesn't
mean your data is there.

Your file sounds like it's toast - no, I don't know of anything.
