Managing Software Development in Project

Doug Calahan

Does anyone utilize MS Project to manage software development on an actual
software product rather than custom development? (BTW, the software template
is far too simple for us to use).

We have an internally developed application (old and clunky) that we use to
manage client requests for the software, choose requests for a release,
assign requests to a developer, schedule with QA, etc.

Is there any sort of MS Project based solution that might be able to
accomodate this? I want to use project for big strategic initiatives and it
would be great to have the development process captured in here as well.

Doug,

I see you're looking for a Project base solution, but I think there are
other types of application that maybe useful and can capture your idea in a
better way.

In an advanced business process automation software you can capture the
whole process of managing requests from clients for example. And capture the
business rules and integration with other softwares that maybe Project
doesn't have out the box.

I wrote an article recently about managing software requeriments using our
product Procx.
Here's the link: http://businessandprocess.com/archive/2005/10/13/153.aspx.
You can, for example, after the request is completed and approved, to create
a new project in Microsoft Project using a defined template directly from
the process.

If you're interested, you can get a trial from our site:

It's not just workflow. It's about the process.
