MANPOWER SHIFT PATTERNS IN PROJECTS

How do I setup a 4on 4off shift pattern in projects

Neil,
Well that depends, are you looking for a 24 hour work day or a 12 hour
work day?

Basically, you would create a custom calendar, (Tools/Change Working
Time), that identified the appropriate work days, (i.e. M-F or 7 day),
and then set up the shifts something like the following: (This is for a
24 hour work day.)
12:00 AM to 4:00 AM
8:00 AM to 12:00 PM
4:00 PM to 8:00 PM

You might also want to change the definitions of a day under
Tools/Options/Calendar

Hope this helps

Thanks for the helpful responce John
The shift pattern I need to use is
Day shift 0600-1800
Night Shift 18-00-0600
The problem that I have is that project only seems to allow shifts that fit
into the 7 day week, I need to use an 8day week (in the words of the famous
song!)
That then gives 24/7 coverage using 4 people (its a very popular shift)
Any ideas much appreicated

Neil,
I guess I don't understand your shift structure. On my clock 0600 to
1800 is 12 hours and 1800, (I assume that's what 18-00 is supposed to
be), to 0600 is another 12 hours. So where is the 4 on/4 off?

Well yeah, Project only allows 7 days per week because that's what there
is in the earth calendar. I think the Beatles were in a parallel
universe when they wrote the song (remember they smoked some funny
stuff).

We need a better explanation of what you want before we can help.
Obviously we are not on the same page (or is that clock).

Hello John

Thanks for the responce, to expand slightly on what I am trying to achieve;

Shift 1 start 0600am- ends 1800pm
Shift 2 starts 1800pm- ends 0600am(next day)
Shift 1 works 4 days then has 4 days off then works shift 2 for 4 days then
4 days off.
Shift 2 works opposite shift 1.
Sfift 3 and 4 work the same pattern but staggered so as to give 1 person on
duty 24/7
These shift patterns are use by Police, Fire Department, Airport and Airline
Operations, Gas Stations in fact anyservice outside of the normal Mon-Fri.

The important point is that to cover 24/7 it is necessary to think outside
of the working week based on seven days. The rotation in this case being
over a 56day period

There are lots of other rotations that are used ie 7days on duty 3 days off
7 days on 4 days off. (ie work 14days in a 21day period)

The question therefore is "Can Project Handle Shift Patterns that work on a
rotation outside of the 7day week"

Any ideas for this reak world situation would be much appreicated

Neil,
OK, OK, you were talking days and I was thinking in hours. Isn't it
great what a little clarification will do.

I've never worked with service organization type shifts but I can
certainly understand what you are talking about. I don't have time to
try all the variations but the following should work or at least get you
headed in the right direction.
1. Set up your project to use the 24 hour calendar (Project/Project
Information)
2. For each shift resource, create a new customized calendar. I would
start with a new base calendar for the first resource, other shift
resource calendars can then be created from that one.
3. To make creating the custom calendar a little easier I would use the
following process:
a. Click on the header for Sunday and drag the mouse over to
Saturday. That effectively selects all days for all months.
b. With all days selected, enter the start and stop times. Note that
for shift 2 resources the time must be split on two lines (i.e. first
line from: 12:00AM to: 6:00AM, and second line from: 6:00PM to: 12:00AM).
c. Now for each month select days in groups of 4 to designate as
non-working.
4. Remember to also change the start and finish times (probably 12:00Am
and 12:00AM respectively) as well as the hours per day (12) under
Tools/Options/Calendar. I not sure how I would define the hours per week
since it varies from 24 to 48 hours depending on the week, but these
settings only tell Project how to populate the Duration field.

What you should end up with for each resource is a calendar with a
waterfall appearance. A similar type of process could be used for other
rotations.

By the way, was that a typo in your last sentence (i.e. "reak" world) or
was that intentional :)

Hope this helps.
