messages come as attachments

Running Outlook 97.
Recently switched from OE.

Many emails with simple written messages now come as
attachments.
ie. when you open the message there is an 'e' icon with an
ATT.number.html beneath which then needs to be opened
again to read the message.
This did not happen before with OE.
how can i fix this so i don't have to open and close twice?

Outlook 97 doesn't support HTML formatting - to view the messages as HTML,
you need to open the attachment in IE.
