Messages stay in Outbox

I use Microsoft Outlook 2003 as my e-mail client, and sbcglobal with a DSL
line as my ISP. Every couple of days an e-mail refuses to leave the Outbox.
There is no connection problem, I'm not working Offline, and I receive no
error message. I can see no pattern. It happens with a variety of recipient
ISPs. One example: yesterday an e-mail to a particular recipipient wouldn't
leave the Outbox. Today I was able to send an identical e-mail to that
recipient, but the one I created yesterday still won't go. Sometimes a Reply
to an e-mail won't go, but if I send a new e-mail it will go. This doesn't
always work. I have tried changing it to “Not read†(by right-clicking on
the message) and re-opening it and Sending it. I have all updates to Office
and to XP.
