Modify old equations in Word 2007

Debbie

I have some Word 2003 documents and contain equations made with Equation
Editor 3. Now I swap to use Word 2007 in Windows Vista, but unable to modify
equations in these documents.

Whenever I click on the equation, error "Microsoft edquation Editor has
stopped Working" appears. Later on it seems installing something and need to
restart the system. But this doesn't help solving the problem.

I have tried to convert the .doc to .docx but also doesn't help.

Thanks for any suggestion.

Do you still have Word 2003 available (perhaps on a different
computer)? If so, do these equations open in Word 2003? It could be
that if you're doing your Word 2007 editing on a new computer with a
newly-installed copy of Office, that Equation Editor isn't installed.
To verify it's installed, click on the Insert tab in Word's Ribbon,
and in the Text group, click on Object. In the Object dialog that
appears, is Microsoft Equation 3.0 listed?

Yes. I still have Word 2003 and these equations can be opened and modified
in Word 2003. It should not be the problem with my Word document since I
make a new testing document and have the same result.

When I installed Word 2007, I used the Complete option and installed
everything to my computer. I checked the Object dialog and Microsoft
Equation 3.0 exists. However, when I insert this object, same symptom
occurs. Same symptom occurs on different computers.

Thank you,
Debbie Leung

Debbie, I have both Word 2003 and Word 2007 installed here, and I
can't duplicate the problem. If you'll send me a document that's
causing problems for you, I'll take a look at it. You can either send
it to me privately or post it as an attachment to the newsgroup.

Just to make sure I understand your problem though, let me re-state
it. Correct any of my details that are wrong...

You have documents you have created in Word 2003, and the equations
were created with Equation Editor (Microsoft Equation 3.0). When you
open these documents in Word 2007 on a Vista computer, you are unable
to modify the equations in these documents. You get an error that the
Equation Editor has stopped working. Something appears to install, but
it doesn't solve the problem, and saving the document as a docx
doesn't help either. The same problem happens with a new test document
created in Word 2003.

Bob, thank you for your reply and you re-stated my problem perfectly. I
finally figure out the problem is caused by the system locale. Several
computers have the system locale set to non-English and problem occurs. I
changed the system locale back to English and the problem solved.

Thanks again for your reply.

Debbie, thanks for writing back to let us know what caused the
problem. I wouldn't have suspected system locale as the culprit, but
I'll remember that for future reference.
