Mouse clicks won't work inside documents.

Windows Vista Home Premium and Word 2007

Two days ago while I was writing a document the windows update installer
completed installing Windows Update KB947562 and requested a restart. I
saved my document and the system restarted automatically.

When the restart was finished I opened word and opened the document I had
been working on. THREE THINGS were wrong:

1. The document title had bottom margin under it which was not supposed to
be there. I deleted the bottom margins in the title and they have remained
deleted.

2. I was unable to position the typing position marker with the mouse. I
could use the arrow keys to move the position marker just fine. The mouse
cursor moved everywhere normally and the clicks worked when the cursor was in
a menu, but when I moved the cursor inside the document and clicked either
the left or right mouse button, nothing happened. The mouse scroll wheel
produced normal results.

I opened several documents and the same conditions existed. I created new
documents and the same conditions existed .

3. When I attempted to close Word, the program quit working and Windows
attempted to find the cause. Never reported the cause although Windows
eventually closed Word.

I opened and checked each of the other Office Applications and they all
functioned normally.

So I closed Word and ran the Office 2007 Repair program. The repair program
completed normally and reported repair was complete. I restarted the
computer and reopened Word.

Nothing had changed within Word. The mouse clicks still would not work when
the mouse cursor was positioned inside a document.

I uninstalled the Windows Update KB947562, restarted the computer and opened
Word. Nothing had changed.

So I used the Office installer disk to change the office by making Word "not
available" then restarted the computer and attempted to open Word. Word
opened but nothing had changed.

So I uninstalled Office 2007, restarted the computer, reinstalled Windows
Update KB947562, restarted the computer and reinstalled Office, restarted the
computer and opened Word. Nothing had changed except that now Word will
close properly.

And great and wonderful suggestions or routine and simple suggestions will
be much appreciated

Hi Dave,

In Word 2007 Options list of Add-ins (Alt, F, I, A, A) what items, if any do you have listed as 'disabled'?

Do you get the same behavior if you hold the ctrl key while starting Word?

If things work, does making the registry change in this article help after restarting Word?

Hi Bob

Thanks very much for a very complete and effective answer.

When I received your answer I was in the midst of installing 9 office
updates because I had uninstalled and reinstalled office.

Before the updates were installedd I could not get access to the add-ins
list. Now I cand and I have no add-ins disabled.

Because of the updates being installed I could not check to see if the issue
occurred if I opened Word in safe mode.

I followed the instructions and deleted the registry key per the
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940791/en-us?FR=1 while the updates were
installing.

When the updates finished installing I restarted the computer and now Word
works correctly.

Thank you very much.

Easy to fix. It has to do with the add-in's

1. Click on Start Run winword.exe /a (start word in Safe Mode)
2. Click on the office button top left. On the bottom go to word options
then to add ins.
3. Select the comm add-ins and go
4. Uncheck Adobe Contribute add-in.
5. Close word and restart.

Should Work Like a Charm
