MS Office Project has stopped working error message

K

Kazier

When attempting to open an existing project (.mpp file) project crashes with
the following error:

MS Office Project has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

I am able to create a brand new project. Save it. But when I try to re-open
it I get the same error as above trying to open a previously saved project.
Doesn't matter how I open the project either from within MS Project, File |
Open or if I click on the project itself from it's saved location.

I've re-installed MS Project after uninstalling as well as ran a repair to
no avail. All other MS apps are working properly, word, excell, outlook, etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

M

Melissa

I'm having the same problem. Things were fine yesterday - I worked in Project
all day. Today, issues! I have tried: reinstalling the program - everything.
Someone help!

Hi Mike,
I am running Windows XP, have Project 2007 (standard) and do have SP1
installed. I worked Project just fine yesterday....no updates last night or
this morning but Project is doing the EXACT same thing for me as it is for
Kazier. I even created a new project, saved it, closed it and tried to
repopen. I get the same error.
After I started experiencing the problema nd after about an hour of trying
different things, I went onto Microsoft's site to see if there were any
updates missed. No updates missed so everything is current. All other Office
programs are running just fine and have been all day.
Please help!

Hi Mike,

Exactly the same problem here as well - a fully up to date copy of MS
Project Standard 2007 on an XP machine (also up to date) with no new
installations or patches etc in the last few days yet all of a sudden
yesterday morning, I was unable to open Project files. Like the others I have
tried running the repair installation and then completely uninstalling
Project and reinstalling it - same problem.

Help!

, I have been through the Office Diagnostics and they have all come up
clear, I have tried disabling my anti virus software etc - all to no effect.

Every time I try and open a project file, the app crashes and tries to send
an error report

I've also gone thru the FAQ sheets ad it wont allow me to import an existing
project either.

Nor will it let me pdf an existing project file to work with - this applies
to both projects on my hard disk and on our network here - the next step is
to see if this prob relates to a single pc I guess

I regret to say I have no idea what's causing this or how to recover.
Unless someone else has had and cured the experience, I can only recommend
you contact Microsoft support. Sorry :(

Hi Brian, Melissa and Kazier

Just to confirm, you have XP as the running OS on your machine and
Microsoft Office Project 2007 with SP1?
Was there *anythin*g you were working on or installed yesterday that
was out of the ordinary? Maybe changed settings in Project?
Can you pass me the file you are actually trying to open (we want to
test it out on our end and see if we experience a situation identicle to
yours).

Hi Safinaaz,

It is the same when I try and open any saved file- even if I create a file
with onlya couple of items

To confirm - XP with MS Project 2007 SP1, with no changes between switching
my pc off on Tuesday night and on again on wednesday morning except that it
no longer opened files - this applies to Office 2007 files and 2003 files
(some of the folksd in my office still run 2003 but can open the files fine,
while I cant

For me, I am running XP, have SP1 installed and have Project 2007 Standard. I
worked in Project all day on 9/30. On 10/1, none of my files would open.
Other staff members can open these files so I know they aren't corrupt.
No new installs, updates or changes within the program were made before the
problem started on 10/1.

Hi...I am having the same problem opening MPP files with MS Project Professional 2003 SP3 on Vista. It worked Monday morning, when I went to use it on Wednesday I could no longer open any of my previous project files. I can launch Project, save a new project file but cannot open it afterwards.

In addition to the "Microsoft Project Has Stopped Working" error, I also get "Windows cannot find 'filename'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." error message. This is odd because I use Windows Explorer to locate the file and double click the file...I didn't type the filename in.

Help!

Thanks...Steve.

HI seem to be having the exact same problem as everyone in this thread.
This problem started a couple of days ago. I am running Vista Business
with SP1. I have Office 2007 SP1 with MS Project 2003 Pro SP3. I
tried re-installing to no avail.

Anyone who knows the root cause, I will greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

I had the same problem, but noticed the virus scan running when I opened a
project. I have a Vista machine with Norton Internet Security and found
there have been problems with the Office plug-in in the past. I disabled the
Office plug-in in Norton Internet Security and this fixed the problem on my
machine.

Doug,
Please write me the steps you used in disabling "Office plug-in", I can not
figure it up. I also have VISTA so your solution may work for me too. My
NORTON is "NIS 2008" version and I hope yours is too...
Thanks,
Dushan

Dushan,

I have Norton Internet Security 2008. To disable Office Plug-In, select
Norton Internet Security under Options. On the Norton Internet Options
select Real-Time Protection and click off scanning for Microsoft Office
Documents.

I had written in this post earlier about the exact same problem that
was having. The issue definitely is associated with Norton. I hav
Norton Internet 2009. To get rid of the error, the following needs t
be done.
* Right Click on the Norton Protection Center Icon from the syste
tray
* Select Norton Internet Security
* Click Settings
* Under Basic Security, click Auto-Protect
* Click Configure
* Under Real-Time Protection, take the checkmark off "Turn on scannin
for Micorsoft Office documents"

That should do the trick. I think that Symantec may have applied a
update over the past few days hence everyone is experiencing the sam
issue.

Thank

Doug,
Thanks, your procedure worked!
After disabling "MS Office" from NORTON I can now use MSP!

Now question that needs answer: WHY DID MS Project software cause the
conflict with NORTON and make me lose benefit of NORTON's protection???

If that conflict ever gets resolved, can someone in MS inform me that I can
turn the Norton/Office coupling on again, to get back the protection?

Thanks to all that helped me.
Dushan
