MS Update Again Erases Print to OneNote

L

Leslie

I'd avoided installing any security updates for a long time after my
last experience with this issue. However, I made the grievous error
this morning of installing KB950130 which, once again, completely
destroyed my ability to print to OneNote. I've noticed others are
having the same problem. It is extremely difficult to fix. Some
people can simply reinstall the printer, but this never worked for me.

Note to MS Programmers: this is IT. I'll never install another
security update for Office or OneNote (note: I only run OneNote,
refusing to use any other Office product) from you because I no longer
have any faith in your programming ability. After all, how hard is it
NOT TO DISABLE a working program.

Here's what I had to do last February:
1. Uninstall OneNote
2. Run ATF-Cleaner to remove every trace of temporary files, etc.
3.Run Registry Cleaner software to completely eliminate any reference
to OneNote in the registry
4. Make certain the Send to OneNote printer has been deleted
5. Make certain XPS printer created by SP1 has been deleted
6. Run Registry Cleaner again to eliminate all references to this
printer
7. Re-boot
8. Re-install OneNote

You have to do all of this because in my experience the methods
explained on Daniel Escarpa's page as of 2/27/08 did not work. Nor
did the one on Patrick Schmid's site as of the same date.

I tried simply uninstalling KB950130 which worked. I can now Print to
OneNote. So, if you're really lucky this time, that's all you have to
do. Just uninstall this broken security update. I maintain this is a
sad commentary on Microsoft's inability to fix both security and
programming problems in a program without breaking it.

I've installed the update as well, but still have the OneNote printer.
Could you tell me a bit more about your system configuration? Specifically:
Which OS are you using? Which service pack?
Are you logging on to your computer as a standard user or as an admin?
Is the computer part of a domain administered by an IT deparment, or is
it a home computer?
Do you have any other printers installed? If so, which one is the default?
Is there anything else unusual about your computer's configuration?

Also, if you re-install the update, does the OneNote printer disappear
again?

I'm sorry for your experience. I hope that in the future you avoid
clicking on hyperlinks to prevent compromising your computer.

You'd be surprised...

AFAICS this has nothing to do with the problem of the ON printer.
IMHO this is just *coincidence*!!

I have this update installed on more than one computer and it does not
cause any problem on my system(s).

Ilya, as I might have your ear:
Just a few minutes ago I replied to a posting of Ben's.
Let me repeat it here:

"Ben,
IMHO this is just one more appearance of the *in*general* problem of the
"lost SendToOneNote printer" which appears several times per day (or at
least several times per week) in this NG.

IMHO it would be high time to
- collect together all of the messages appearing here;
- collect together all of the solutions having been posted here over the
time;
- have the developers' team investigate the issue and provide solutions;
- create an FAQ paper for the time until this issue will be solved.

Honestly speaking:
I'm really fed up with hearing of this problem day by day.

Unfortunately, so far all we have is bits and pieces of information, and
not anything concrete. We know that the printer often disappears after
installing updates, but that's about it. It's happened on both XP and
Vista. It does not appear to be specific to updates for Office, but I
can't be sure. We don't know if uninstalling and reinstalling an update
that caused the print driver to disappear will cause it to disappear
again. I haven't been able to get the print driver to disappear on any
of my computers, so for now I can only go on what people post here. I
don't even know what to ask people about their computers that'd help in
tracking down the problem.

If you have anything that you think might be helpful, by all means,
please post it. But until we have a way to get the printer to disappear

Hi Ilya,

Perhaps I can help. I have experienced this problem with 2 different PCs
today. My wife's is XP Home, and mine is Vista Business. In both cases, we
found today that our OneNote printer had disappeared. Also, in both cases, by
going back to the System Restore point before the latest Windows Update, the
printer returned.

My first concern is to put back as much of the Update as I can without
breaking the printer again, since the updates were security related. Would
you recommend that I try manually selecting to install all of the 9/9/08
updates except for the one (KB950130) specifically for OneNote?

A further update - after backing up to the Restore Point before the update,
and getting the printer back, I reisntalled all updates except the one for
OneNote. and the printer is still there - on both the XP and Vista machines.

Thanks for your concern, Ilya and your efforts to find out on this nasty
common problem.

Unfortunately, so far all we have is bits and pieces of
information, and not anything concrete. We know that the printer
often disappears after installing updates, but that's about it.
It's happened on both XP and Vista. It does not appear to be
specific to updates for Office, but I can't be sure.

It had happened to me during the Beta but *never* with the final
product.
I have ON at present running on 3 machines (two desktops and a HP tc1000
TabletPC) under Vista and - for a couple of weeks now - on my old laptop
under XP.

I have all Vista updates and all Office updates installed (just 13
updates yesterday and today) and I never had to face the problem.
I just know about it's existence through reading each and any thread in
this NG.
We don't know
if uninstalling and reinstalling an update that caused the print
driver to disappear will cause it to disappear again. I haven't
been able to get the print driver to disappear on any of my
computers, so for now I can only go on what people post here. I
don't even know what to ask people about their computers that'd
help in tracking down the problem.

Oh Yes, any developer's best friends are those bug which show up totally
erratically {siiigh} and - even worse - not reproducible.
As so far - knock on wood <!> - I was not yet bitten, I can not
contribute neither to the detection of what is going on on so many
machines (I'm sure that here we only see head of an iceberg), nor a
solution.
If you have anything that you think might be helpful, by all means,
please post it. But until we have a way to get the printer to
disappear on demand, or at least some solid leads, progress is
going to be slow at best.

What might be useful would be to go through this group and pick up all
of the solutions posted here.
I recall that sometimes recipes were posted and we received success
reports.
So f.e. what "Corren" posted in the thread
"Getting send to OneNote back as on option when printing" on Aug 14,
2008
http://groups.google.de/group/microsoft.public.onenote/msg/2f689e90fb2295fe
quoting from an old thread
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...atrick+schmid+onenote+2007+printer+not+found#

There were several confirmations that this would work - given the
ON-printer was still available as a connection..

Thanks again
Rainald

This happens regularly to me. I have learned that the easiest fix is to
insert my OneNote installation disk and run "Repair" - the print driver comes
back! It's frustrating, but not fatal.

As said before in several threads:
I for one can not detect any kind of *causality*.
So far no problems with any updates on any of my computers - Vista or
XP - (knock-on-wood <!>).

I'm really far from denying that updates may play a role in the cases
given.

But it's not compulsory at all and for sure not the one and only reason.

Hey guys,

I have definitively identified one thing that will cause the OneNote
printer to disappear. Download and install KB950130 and you can watch
the printer disappear from the Printer and Faxes window. This applies
to XP SP2. I think that the installation of Office 2007 SP1 will also
cause the printer to disappear. (The above KB is probably part of
Office 2007 SP1) I haven't been able to verify this yet but several
of our students have said that their OneNote printer disappeared
after
installing SP1. As far as fixing it is concerned, we have been either
uninstalling and reinstalling OneNote 2007 or running a repair of
OneNote 2007 using a OneNote 2007 install CD. However, when you do
this, it screws up the installation to the point that the next time
you do Windows Update, Windows Update thinks that the above installs
have not been done, so it reinstalls the very updates that break the
OneNote printer. A catch 22 if I've ever seen one. We have decided
that the only way to safely get around this is to turn off automatic
updates altogether and manually install updates after carefully
selecting the above KB not to ever install. Any other fix would have
to come from Microsoft.

Oh, I forgot to mention that when the culprit updates install, they
may or may not delete the OneNote Printer port. If the printer port
is deleted, it is difficult to just insert a new OneNote printer
because
then you have to create a new Send To Microsoft OneNote Port: (Notice
the : at the end. All Microsoft installed ports have a : at the end.
If you try to create a port with a : , you get a message that says, "
'Send To Microsoft OneNote Port:' is an invalid port name.) If you
leave off the :, the new printer may or may not work. Remember when
you are just installing a new OneNote printer, that the names of all
of the elements that are used to set up the printer must be named the
same as they are when Microsoft installs them. The printer port I've
already covered. The printer must be named Send To OneNote 2007. The
driver is named 'Send To Microsoft OneNote Driver. The Print
processor must be OneNotePrint2007 and default data type is 'raw'. If
all of
the elements needed to set up the printer are available, then you can
create a generic printer and select all of the elements for the
OneNote printer. If all of the elements are not present, you will
probably have to repair or reinstall OneNote.

Finally, our students use Vista on their notebooks. They are having
the same problems and I have successfully corrected the problem by
using the above techniques. However, to maintain your OneNote
printer,
you will have to turn off automatic updates (why would anyone want it
on in the first place). Do manual updates and don't let the KB listed
above be reintroduced into your system.

And Rainald is correct. There are other scenarios that can cause the
OneNote printer to disappear. If you can't get the OneNote printer
back by using the above methods, blow away all of your printers and
repair OneNote. I have already found 2 or 3 printer driver installs
that will blow away the OneNote printer. Reinstall any printers that
you need one at a time to see if you can determine which one is
causing the problem. If you can find which one it is, go to their web
site and see if there are any new drivers for that printer. This may
allow you to reinstall the printer without losing the OneNote printer.

One my own machine, I can insert just about every kind of document
into OneNote 2007 with now problem. But I do have a situation with
Adobe .pdf files. The OneNote printer must be selected as the default
printer to print a .pdf file to OneNote from inside the Adobe .pdf
application.
