Multiple references to the same footnote ?

How do we put multiple references in the body of the text to the same
footnote? For example, three superscript number "3" 's in different
paragraphs that all refer to the same footnote. We also want all three
footnote references in the body to be re-numbered (updated) if another
footnote is inserted before the third footnote. Can this be done?

Insert the first footnote as usual, then use a bookmark to reference the
superscripted number in the other locations.

Thank you, Suzanne, this appears to be exactly what we needed. However, we
cannot get the cross-reference numbers to update after inserting a new
footnote. We can right-click and update each one independently, but how do
we force all the cross-references to update? Shouldn't this happen
automatically and immediately by default?

Thanks,

Richard

Thanks, Peter, what advantages might bookmarks have over cross-referencing?

Cross-references unfortunately don't update automatically but should update
when you print, switch to Print Preview, or update fields generally.

Same thing - you use a cross reference to refer to a bookmark.

The important point here, however, being that footnotes already have
built-in bookmarks (they're listed separately in the cross-reference
dialog), so that you don't have to actually bookmark them.

Thank you for the instruction on how this feature works. We have used
wordprocessors that also provide a feature that will update or refresh all
the cross-references upon request by the user. For example, the user can
refresh all references in Corel Wordperfect by selecting a menu option to
'generate' the cross references. In our opinion, this is an extremely
effective approach to making sure the references are functioning correctly
and displaying the proper information.

Thanks,

Richard

Will "Update fields" not do that?

Thank you, Peter. You are very likely correct. As a new user, I am not
familiar with this feature. Where is it found in Word 2007?

Thanks,
Richard
