We have a number of personal folder (.PST) files that are associated with
Outlook 2002 E-mail Accounts. We want to move the files to a new location
for easier backup, but have had a real struggle doing so. We have followed
the instructions in the KnowledgeBase article #291636, but are still unable
to make the proper changes. We can physically move the files to the desired
location, but we cannot re-associate the files with the e-mail accounts
because of several problems as follows: First, when creating an e-mail
account (including the associated data file that is automatically created),
we cannot specify the name of the file or where the data file will be
created. As such, we can only allow the system to create it in the default
location with a default name and then change the location or name as
desired. Second, we follow the KB article #291636 and use the "New Outlook
Data File" button from the "E-mail Accounts" dialog to select the personal
folder (.PST) in its new location, but the results are confusing to us.
This option simply appears to OPEN the folder, just as if the user had used
the "File\Open" menu option from the menu bar, so why go through all this if
we could have done the same thing from the file menu in half the steps?.
Furthermore, using the "New Outlook Data File" button, does not associate
the selected data file with the e-mail account that was highlighted in the
e-mail account dialog from which the "New Outlook Data File" button was
pressed. As such, it appears that there is no way to change the data file
associated with an e-mail account. Third, if the user tries to delete the
old data file, in the old location, an error message is displayed indicating
that the user cannot delete the old data file because it is associated with
an e-mail account. At this point you can delete the e-mail account and the
accompanying "old" data file, but you cannot create a new e-mail account
associated with the old data file in the new location. Fourth, we have
tried to just move the data file and then use the browse option given when
Outlook cannot find the associated data file, but this does not seem to
consistently work. Especially when Outlook automatically restores certain
data files to the old location after they have been deleted, even if they
were not the default data file. Any HELP would be sincerely appreciated.
Thanks,
Richard Wilkinson
