New, Reply, Forward Buttons Greyed Out

Hi

I have been using MS Outlook 2003 XP for 6 weeks without problems to access
a POP3/SMTP email account (NTL). I can now receive emails but various menu
and toolbar options including New Mail, Reply, Forward, Customise and Options
are greyed out?

My email account details are correct and test OK & I have full funtionality
if I access email via the Internet rather than Outlook.

Help please...
