Normal text is grayed

Formatting shows Normal, but the text has a gray background. No shading and
no highlighting are applied. These are not fields and the text is not in the
header or footer. I accepted all changes on the Review toolbar. I can
remove by copying, pasting special, unformatted, then reapplying the
paragraph and character formats.

These files are from a third party and there a lot of them.

What's going on here?

Bob,
Are you sure there is no shading applied to the text? I say this because
some people apply it to selected text and not to the paragraph. Does
selecting and pressing ctrl+spacebar remove it?

Thanks, but that doesn't work. Nor does {Ctrl-Shift-n}.

These files are from an academic who uses Open Office. I suspect we will
have to do it the hard way; at any rate, we have begun to do so.

By the way: The notification link from MS did not lead me to your response.
Going to "discussion home" and searching for the subject did so.
