omit text from table of contents

Chris

Hi. I'm using Microsoft Word 2003. I'm creating a automatic table of contents
based on a style. This generates a table of contents just fine. However some
of my table captions are as follows:

Table 2. Summary of cost estimates for 2007 (page 1 of 2).

In the automatically generated TOC all of this caption shows up. However, I
would like to remove "(page 1 of 2)" from the TOC. I know how to manually
delete this text, but when I update the TOC it comes back (and it don't want
to just update the page numbers). I have 60 tables in this document so I do
not want to manually mark each title with {TC}. Is there a way that I can set
up the TOC to omit "(page 1 of 2)" from all table entries? Maybe using a
switch?

Thanks -

Chris:

You could either use TC fields to manually record the portion of each
caption you want to have in your TOC (and stop including the caption's style)
OR use a style separator to style the undesired text so as not to be included
in the TOC.

Thanks for the help. I have used the TC fields, I was just hoping there was
an easier way, such as using a switch. As far as the style separator - that
would work if my text wasn't all on the same line. In my experience, as long
as the styles are separated by a paragraph mark it works fine, but if I tried
to apply two different styles to the same sentence it doesn't work. Maybe I'm
doing that wrong. Have you been able to apply two different styles to the
same sentence?

Chris:

That's exactly what a style separator does -- it lets you apply two
different paragraph styles to the same paragraph.

I haven't used the feature per se (being back on Word 2000) but I have used
its precursor -- the technique of defining the first para mark as hidden
text. That works just as you'd wish it would.

In theory this should work, and it does as far as the sentence having two
different styles applied. However, when I update the TOC it shows all the
text in the sentence (both styles - even though I have the TOC only pulling
one style).

Chris:

The something else is at work here. It works perfectly for me. Only the
first part of the heading appears in the TOC, but the entire heading appears
in the body -- all on one line.

Are you using an actual style separator? Maybe it has a bug as implemented.
Maybe you could try the older method of making the first paragraph mark
hidden (that's what I do).
