Opening MSP 98 w/MSP 2002 Professional

Hello -

I've a consulting colleague working with me who is having
difficulties opening an MS Project 98 file with MSP 2002
professional.

She is running Windows XP, is connected to our company
LAN, has an NT account and has been given read/write
access to the network share where the file is located.

When she opens the share and selects an MSP98 .mpp file,
MSP 2002 opens, the splash page comes up, and then
basically hangs. That MSP 2002 process cannot be
terminated with Task Manager.

Although MS on-line documentation says MSP 2002 can open
an MSP989 file, I resaved the file as MSP 2000 - when she
tried to open that new MSP 2000 file, it did open, but in
the process, wiped out her desktop icons and taskbar at
the bottom of the screen....

I know this is alot, but if anyone has any suggestions how
this Windows XP user can access a Windows 2000 share
drive, open a MSP98 file from MSP2002, and not crash her
laptop in the process, that would be very much appreciated.

Hi Mike,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

P2002 should be able to read a P98 file. It sounds like some corruption has
set in, so you'll have to go into an elimination role! Does it happen with
any other P98 file? Does it happen on other PCs? You need to find whether
it is the particular project that gives trouble, or the installation of
Project 2002 on that machine, or it may even require a reinstal of Office.
You could also try disabling any virus checking program. If you suspect a
corrupt file, you could try the suggestions in FAQ Item: 43. File Bloat? -
Might be Corruption.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: <http://www.mvps.org/project/>

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :))
