Outlook 2000 not recieving emails

I have a Windows XP machine with Office 2000 SP3, connected to an exchange
2003 server in a work environment. when someone sends me an email, I will not
recieve a notification, nor will it show in Outlook until I click on a
folder, and then it will show the emails that I have recieved. How do I fix
this?

Try turning off the Windows firewall.

didn't work, it still doesn't show up in the email until i click around a few
times in the inbox.
