Outlook 2003 does not open properly

When I open Outlook 2003 (set up with my GMAIL pop account) it closes by
itself after about 5 to 10 seconds after I opened it. I'm running WINXP with
the latest service pack and security updates. I have also installed the
latest Office 2003 updates. I'm running Norton Anti-virus 2005. (I've tried
it with the antivirus off too). I've tried deleting and creating a new
profile (twice) and that did not resolve it. I've run the scanpst file on
all pst's on my hard drive to no avail. I've uninstalled and re-installed
outlook to no avail. I've cleaned up my registry, and still nothing! Not
sure where to go from here. I know the profile setup is correct, because
when I run the connection test it works fine. I have also tried using
various switches when I open outlook (i.e. /safe, /safe:1, /safe:2, among
others). Another weird thing is that the outlook icon will show up in the
windows system tray after the program closes and when I go to click on it it
disappears. I checked the processes running and I don't see that outlook is
running in the background. Is it a virus? If so how come Norton hasn't
caught it? (I have the most recent library from norton and have scanned the
comp since the problem started). I've read every suggestion online and I
still can't figure it out. Please somebody help me!!

Thanks,
Joe
