Outlook 2003 probelm? Or Wireless 3000 keyboard problem? Or ?

D

D.MARKLINGER

I am running XP and Office Pro 2003...and all are updated just fine. A month
back, I had to replace the power supply on my pc. When it was returned, I
plugged in all my devices, incl the Microsoft Wireless 3000 Keyboard and
Mouse, which worked fine before. Now, every time I open Outlook 2003, the
keyboard freezes after I type, and the characters appear several minutes
LATER on the screen. I've reloaded the Intellitype software that it comes
with, replaced batteries, done the testing, used different USB ports...and
the problem won't go away. It doesn't happen when I use any other Office aps,
like Word or Excel, or whatever. The mouse works just fine. And both the
keyboard and mouse are the 'standard' distance from the sensor device...have
been reset, both the sensor and the keyboard, many times!
The solution I have been using is to do the 'detect and repair' feature of
Outlook 2003, where it seems to reload {all?} of Office, and takes about 8
minutes. Then the keyboard operates just fine, until I either stop/start
Outlook, or {obviously} reboot the pc for whatever reason.
Frustrating. I have run all kinds of my normal virus scans, rootkey scans,
adware, malware, etc....and it still happens.

Outlook 2003 and previous use Internet Explorer to render HTML. A recent
security update for IE sports a new anti-phishing mechanism that also scans
the sites listed in Restricted Zones. Sadly due to Outlook's IE dependancy
it will check it for Outlook too well composing new emails EVERY TIME you
type a character which can result in poor performance in Outlook if you have
a lot of sites added to your restricted zone. I have reported the issue to
Microsoft already a while back. The current workaround is to keep the amount
of sites listed in the Restricted Zone to a minimum.

Thank you for the information.
May we consider that Microsoft is working on a fix ? Is it possible to have
an idea of the roadmap ?

You'll have to contact Microsoft directly for that. Note that there is no
good reason to overpopulate the Restricted sites zone. Basically you only
add sites to that for testing purposes. Therefor I don't think the issue has
a high priority and if an update for it already will become available it
will be propbably just a hotfix and not an actual public update.

OK..that sounds like that's the problem, as it surfaced out of nowhere, and
maybe was introduced on the IE7 install that hapnned around the same time. I
never put those 2 {my power supply and IE7} 'together', so that might be it.
To watch the number of sites in the RESTRICTED ZONES, it's the TOOLS under
IE. But when I look there, I am using the INTERNET option and now just
changed the setting to the DEFAULT ~ the other 3 I didn't change, and the
RESTRICTED is HIGH.
Hope this is right then...I'll try it later and see if this goes away!
Appreciated!

OK I understand.
In fact, I'm using Outlook XP 2002, IE7 and Spybot & Spywareblaster. I'm
familiar with vaccinatino proposed by both Spybot and Spyblaster. Do you mean
that I should set vaccination to off ? And, using IE7, to reste restricted
sites ?
Personaly, because I find this problem is very annoyant and I'm wondering if
I will succeed in finding a solution (or if there will be a hotfix) or if I
will decide to change my mail software...

Thanks "ROADY'...that was indeed the problem. I cleaned up my IE 7 settings,
and and rebooted....no more keyboard 'stuttering'....APPRECIATED!
I was beginning to wonder, as I did all those things reported earlier, plus
stopped system tasks, removed some newer utility software...it wasn't any of
those. I almost took the keyobord/mouse back for an exchange!
Again, thanks!

Well thank you first for your explaination.
For my case, I identified the problem and found the solution thanks to your
(and others) advices on this forum.

My configuration.
Win XP pro sp2 (newly reinstalled), 2 limited accounts and 1 administrator.
Internet explorer 7, Office XP 2002 sp3, spybot and spywareblaster.

When installing spybot and spywareblaster, using admin account, I vaccinated
for all known threats using both. From this fact, I decided to have a look to
other limited accounts, in registry (zonemap, Domains and Ranges) and in IE7
restricted zones. Effectively, no entries and Outlook worked fine with HTML
form mails.
On the admin account, hundreds of entries regarding restricted sites, in
registry and therefore on IE7 restricted sites. I decided to deactivated
vaccination first on spybot then on spywareblaster. Then, I checked IE7 and
the BDD regarding Domains and Ranges entries on registry. All of them were
correctly removed. So my restricted sites list was completely cleared.

I reboot and checked Outlook XP, using HTML form.
The problem was solved and everything were OK !!!

Good point for me, at the moment, thanks to you all.
BUT : I'm wondering now the opportunity to use such a feature "Zonemap",
i.e. the use of restricted sites list because of the consequences on CPU
activities (thousands of registry requests during form filling) and very long
delay when typing... And now, what's about Spybot and spywareblaster ? Based

Adding lots of sites to the Restricted Sites zone isn't a good method to
deal with it in the first place. It's like adding all the addresses you
don't want to receive mail from in your block list. If you still want to go
this way use the much more efficient hosts file approach instead;

I have experienced the same problem and I found that selecting
Microsort Office Word as the email editor elimitated the problem (in
Outlook 2003 it is selected by Tools, Options, Mail Format). I
remembered that I recently de-selected that option, and as soon as I
re-selected it my problem went away.
