Outlook 2003 won't let me open attachments in saved emails

I have emails saved in folders within Outlook. A number have MS Excel
attachments.

Whenever I try to open an Excel attachment in an email saved in a folder
I get the pop-up window message "could not open one or more
attachments". Don't know if this is just Excel but I was just able to
open a PDF in anothe saved folder.

If I move the email back into the Inbox, I can open the attachment
without difficulty.

Any idea what I've got to do to open attachments without moving emails
out of their saved folders?
