Outlook 2007 (and Office) Sluggish performance

I am on a trial of Office 2007, with most of my use in Outlook 2007. An
I am nonplused to say the least. Very very sluggish… here’s the cor
issues, including my opinions and conclusions. I've read many post
here, esp. on OL 2007 RTM. So the bottomline question is "how t
monitor or test pc performance factors... what matters most?" and "whe
to expect a realistic workhorse app. from Microsoft "?

- I find Outlook, and much of Office 2007 unusable, unproductive
performance sluggish.
- The simplest things take too long for me to do good work. Open
email (2 secs to 1 minute!!). Downloads from POP servers generall
‘okay’ (I consider Norton AV screening vital, and NAV takes time, als
I have its Office options ‘off’). Also, simply switching from Inbox t
Bus. Contact Mgr Home takes 55sec to 2 min. initially (this is observe
for each first time ‘switch’ to BCMgr, with subsequent switches possibl
less time, say 12 sec. --- Shut down Outlook and restart it, sam
‘initial’ delays are observed)
- I noticed similar delays displaying Word 2007 application o
documents.
- I will uninstall Office 2007 and go back to Outlook 2002 etc. May d
trial again on a diff. PC when I build drive and OS from scratch.
- I like MS OneNote 2007 for some things… and while at times I see “i
is not zippy”, none of it suffers the sluggish perf. of the revampe
Office apps.
- NOTE: The performance issues are NOT only Microsoft’s Office apps
but certain other applications work slow on my machine. These include
CRM apps that use .NET, a browser-like interface, and SQL Serve
(Express). Other Knowledge-base apps and flowcharting/mapping app
that use database engines and possibly .NET (?) [ I did not track al
issues and component architectures unfortunately.]

In the time I tried the trial Office… I had 3 or 4 ‘hangs’ in Outloo
(2 generated ‘send report’ incidents) and 1 or 2 crashes in Word. O
course, these used up some of the allocated ‘start ups’ for tria
version.

I DID see some improvements (temporary) under these conditions:
• Set Computer>>>Properties>>>Advanced Performance Settings t
prioritize resources for system/background, and prioritize memory fo
programs. Also, set Visual Effects for best-performance.
• Found .pst file in Windows Explorer, Rt-Clk >>Properties >>Advanced
and Checked to allow indexing. Later rebooted. CAUTION here!!! I a
not sure this was a good thing to do.
• “temporary” improvement in that sluggish performance returned… as
opened more apps and did more (normal) work over a few hours. Outloo
2002 did not degrade this way. [ Out of 1 GB physical RAM, Commit i
680MB after a couple apps, grows to 877MB or more with time. PageFil
usage is 160 to 190 usually, with 450MB highest. Would be nice to kno
what other parameters to check]

I agree with many who “rate” this App as not ready for prime time AN
the realworld of PC users whose systems “grow” to run lots o
processes. This garbage accumulation slows almost any application… wit
Office and some other Apps being vulnerable to un-tuned machines.

I expect we collectively have largely IGNORED putting pagefiles o
separate disks, .PST files on separate partitions, and maybe gettin
SQL/DBs on separate partitions (that’s a question)?

One other “test” I will run is to try NOT using wifi and instead goin
to direct connect Eth. Will also test without USB mouse/keybd.

Cheers,
GM?

My system config
Laptop Pent 4 MP 2.2GHz 40G HD 1GB RAM (DDR 266MHz) nVidia GeForce

now back up to 3.5%. Did recent Disk Cleans, also Malware scans etc
(cache and temp files not purged currently).
Win XP Home, SP2 and recently updated. IE v7.x installed.

Some Outlook parameters. Outlook 12 build 4518 -- Online Offic
Updates indicates no updates avail.
Archive file not loaded automatically. PST file is 250MB, 25 folders o
so, 15000 files or so. Use 8 POP accounts, but only Manual downloads
and only 1 acct at a time. No RSS feeds used. No MS Exchange. Did no

Removed Outlook 2007. Reinstalled 2002. My .pst files were fine -
didn't lose anything in switching back ( I think mainly because in 200
Preferences or Options I did not check "unicode" settings (format).)

I find OL2002 "snappier". Useable.

Later, I used SpyBot and the scan found several 'threats', mostl
tracking cookies connected to IE. I wonder if Outlook 2007's use o
some IE features is allowing Malware to slow it down. ( BTW, NAV200
and MS Defender did not catch these cookies
