Outlook comes to grinding halt, any ideas on why?

G'day,

I have a little problem that I have never experienced
before and can't figure out just what the cause is;
perhaps on of you have experienced a similar problem and
can help me.
I upgraded my 20Gig HD to a 120Gig HD, I placed the new
120Gig HD as the master and relegated the 20Gig HD to
slave.
I partitioned the new HD into 20Gig extended drives which,
when including the older 20Gig HD, gave me seven drives of
20Gig each.

I then reinstalled Windows XP and Office XP, updated both
at the MS updates site so that all would be in order.
I updated the BIOS and the USB drivers from the motherboard
manufactures site, then I updated my virus list and my
firewall
programs; rebooted the system and things ran great.
I connect to the net by a 56 Data-Fax-Voice modem and as I
had been offline for over seven days I went online and
visited a few
sites that needed checking; everything ran quite fast and
all seemed to be in order.
While online I thought I should check my email and that's
when things came to a grinding halt.
First I tried using MS Outlook, then I tried MS Outlook
Express, then Eudora, then IncrediMail and finally
Postmaster but all of these mail programs caused the
system to grind to a halt!
As soon as I clicked to check my mail, things ground to a
halt!

The only control I had over the PC was to switch off and
reboot the system. I have tried everything I can think of
and the PC is running A1, even while online, but! If I
fire-up "any" email program and "try" to check my email,
things come to a halt!
I have run several checks on my system for any viruses,
checking "all" files on my system, the virus checks come
up clean.

I'm at a loss and can think of nothing more to check!
Do any of you have any ideas?
I'm prepared to have a look and check any ideas you may
have cause I'm stumped!

Cheers and if any of you can help, thanks in advance.

Disable your firewall and e-mail checking in your anti-virus program to
see if you can then get your e-mails.

Start Outlook in safe mode ("outlook.exe /safe") to make sure an add-in
you installed isn't interferring with Outlook. If safe mode works,
check what add-ins you have installed (Tools -> Options -> Other ->
Advanced -> COM plug-ins and Add-ins).

Use msconfig.exe to disable all startup programs, reboot, and check if
Outlook then works.

In addition to the good idea's that Vanguard posted, have you tried a
CTL-ALT-DEL to bring up Windows Task Manager (before you check email) and
make sure that nothing is using up to much of your system/CPU resources and
then try whatever email program you want (I would go for Outlook Express in
this case as it should use less resources) and then have a look again at the
Task Manager and see if something is eating up your resources ?

I cannot say I have seen something like this one before except for one
person that had two Firewalls and two Anti-virus programs running at the
same time and as soon as he got a connect, got the blue screen of death. But
that does not sound like your case.
Hope you get it working !
