Outlook Outbox error

For no known reason in the last two days when I try to send an email I get
the following error message and no action on the email.

"The message interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem
persists, restart Outlook. Access is denied. Verify the disk is not full or
write-protected and that the file is not being used."

I can receive email, just not send any. When I click on the outbox folder I
get an error message telling me that it "cannot display the folder. The file
is in use and cannot be accessed."

Any ideas on what I should do?

Thank you.

Which version of Outlook? A couple of things come to mind. First try creating a new profile to see if that resolves the issue.

Also run a scandisk to check your hardrive as this may be an indication that the harddrive is having issues or is reaching capacity.

Plus run a scanpst to check your pst (personal folder)

Hello Francine,

I have Outlook 2007. I created another profile and my messages were sent out
fine. What does that imply exactly?

When I run scanpst I get 20% in and an error message occurs telling me that
'an unexpected error prevented access to this file. Use a disk error checking
program to check the disk'. I will run scandisk as I have not done so yet.

My hard drive is less than 50% full and this is a new laptop.

Thank you for the ideas.

The usual advice in this case is to alternate runs of scanpst with runs of
chkdsk.
