Outlook sends dozens of emails marked "not read" by itself

I am using Outlook 2003, and beginning a couple of weeks ago, almost everyone
in my "contacts" list has been sent dozens of emails all prefaced with "not
read". Fortunately, each contact received only the email correspondence
between me and him/her, so no damage was done. Still, it's annoying, clogs my
contacts' email boxes, and I have no way to control it.

Did anyone encounter a similar problem? any ways to fix this?
