Phone Contacts in Outlook

When trying to add a phone contact to Outlook, I type in
the 10 digit phone number (example: 5551231234) and then
hit the tab key to go the next field. Outlook should
autoformat the field, but does not.

The only way to correct this is to double-click the
field, type in the area code in the correct field, and
then delete the area code from the Local Number field.
This is a pain!

Is there a known fix to get Outlook to autoformat the
phone number field?
