Physical % Complete Calculation & Roll-Up

Cory Levine

I am having problems getting the “Physical % Complete†column to roll-up
properly from Detail Tasks to Summary Tasks.

First, a little background - I am using “Physical % Complete†to calculate
earned value and I have baselined my schedule. In some places in my
schedule, I have tasks defined at the fifth outline level; so I have many
sub-Summary Tasks to roll-up.

When I enter actuals for the Detail Tasks and manually enter values into the
“Physical % Complete†column, the values from the Detail Tasks do not
correctly roll-up to the Summary Task. For example, I have nine Detail tasks
beneath a Summary Task. When I specify that six of the Detail Tasks are 100%
complete, the Summary Task should calculate to show a value of about 67%.
Instead, it shows a value of 100%. Any ideas?

Also, not all sub-Summary Tasks are rolling-up to their parent Summary
Tasks. For example, I enter “Physical % Complete†values in the Detail Tasks
of a sub-Summary Task which roll-up (albeit incorrectly) to the sub-Summary
Task. However, the “Physical % Complete†value in that sub-Summary Task does
not roll-up at all to its parent Summary Task. Again, any ideas?

Hello Cory,
The "Physical % Complete" *never* rolls-up to Summary Tasks. As you said,
it's used to calculate Earned value. EV will roll-up to summary. Don't
confuse with the Percent Complete.

Then why does it work sometimes and not others? I have the same issue - if
Physical % Complete *never* rolled up I wouldn't be concerned, but sometimes
it does, and sometimes it doesn't. Can you explain that?
Thanks

Physical % rollup

Hi Cory,

Physical % complete does roll up. However certain steps criteria must be met before it will:

1. project must be base lined
2. child tasks for the summary must have a resource & cost assigned to it
3. (most common cause of Physical % not rolling up) All the tasks must be set to "physical % complete". Do this by:

right click anywhere on field headings, insert column, choose "earned value method"
set all the tasks to physical % complete.

for future you can set the default "earned value method" in options:

in file tab, choose options, then advanced, in earned value options choose "physical % complete"
You may also choose which baseline the physical % complete is used calculations with some of the earned value type fields.

Hope this helps,

BTW Cory

my problem is exactly the same as yours, let me know if you find the problem.

I posted the last because I've seen alot of threads posted explaining that physical % complete field does not roll up.

found this article which may help but this forum will not allow me to provide a link:

find it by google "project Epistemology" then search "physical % complete" in their search box
