pre release version of the compatability pack error: Bob Buckland

I think you may have the best response for me, after reviewing several
search results: I am trying to open DOCX files, using WORD 2002, part of the
Office that was installed on my computer in March of 2008. According to
everything I have selected the version is valid and registered.

OS: XP PRO

All updates and downloads are current (SP3 installed), both XP and OFFICE.

I receive the following error message:

This is a pre release version of the compatability pack and can open pre
release Office 2007 files only. Do you want to check for a newer version of
the compatability pack?

When I click yes I am directed to the same page and when downloaded and
installed the same error happens over and over.

Now for the interesting part; I installed the compatability pack about 3
months ago, when I recieved a DOCX file. I was able to open a DOCX file
with no problem. I recieved, via email (trusted source) another DOCX file
and when I attempted to open it I was given the message for the compatability
pack. FYI: I can no longer open the first DOCX file now.

I have inserted the OFFICE XP PRO CD and tried to repair etc. to no avail.

I also have an older laptop (Sony Vaio) with same OS and OFFICE setup (pre
installed). I have the compatability pack loaded on it and have no problems.

I have had no problems with viruses ( use McAfee) consistently and doing
other various system checks the sytem is clean.

I truly hope you have answer for this one.

Thanks

Did you uninstall the compatibility pack before trying to replace it?

Did you download this one also?

Did you read the note: Users of the Microsoft Office XP and 2003 programs
Word, Excel, or PowerPoint-please install all High-Priority updates from
Microsoft Update before downloading the Compatibility Pack.

Thank you Graham for responding.

At first I did not uninstall the compatability pack. I however have since
uninstalled the compatibility pack, and then downlaoded an re-installed the
compatability pack again, with the same results and the same erro message.

I also recieved an email via Microsoft that states:

"The statement "This is a pre-release version of the Compatibility Pack and
can open pre-release Office 2007 files only" states that you downloaded the
older version of Office Compatibility Pack which is a pre-release version.
So, please download the latest Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack which will
help you open .docx files."

Please note that the link that you and the aformentioned tech provided are
for the same page /download. That is the one that I have tried numerous
times and still get the same error message.

Is there a recommended procedure that I should try; ie: uninstall comp pack,
reboot, downlaod reinstall comp pack , reboot....? (for example)

This is baffleing me.

re: SP1 yes it is installed (as is SP3)

In that case, it's baffling me too. Sorry :(

Graham: also -I have once again verified that all High-Priority updates are
installed and all office updates have been installed.

I unisntalled the compatability pack ( using control panel, add/remove )
rebooted and downloaded (from yoru link) the compa.pack. Same
story..recieved the exact same error message.

Does anyone know of a later version? the Microsoft support sasy I do not
have the latest version of the comp. pack...yet that is the version that I am
downlaoding and installing. Can anyone tell me the latest or most recent
ver. number?

I wasn't doubting what you said about the error message, merely that I
didn't know the answer; however a quick search at Google reveals -

Hello Grahm!

Thanks for the great link! First time I have seen that page after hours of
searching...

Ok followed the directiosn to a "t"...and now I get a "convert file"
window;

With the options of "Word 2007 Document" or "Word 2007 Macro-Enabled
Document." Selecting either one then gives me the dreaded "pre-release
version of the Comp. Pack... error as above.

I still have the oroginal .docx file in my email attachment files. I used
that to to test the program and even chaning the "save as " file name fails
to work

I think we may be getting clsoer to a solution.....(I hope at least)

Thanks Gary
