Problem printing Word 2 pages per sheet

Hi. For many years I have struggled with a problem. I use Word 2007 now,
but it was the same with 2003. When I try to print a Word document 2 pages
per sheet, one of two problems occurs. Either the printer produces one
single unintelligible character per sheet, spewing the paper out very
quickly, or it prints the pages but with the line spacing distorted so that
it is ialmost illegible. This happens whichever printer I use (Canon or
Epson).
I have discovered a coping strategy that sometimes works. After selecting '2
pages per sheet' in the printer dialogue, I select Printer Properties/Layout,
and use the drop down menu to select 2 or 4 pages per sheet, and then back to
1; then I return to the printer dialogue, and proceed. Sometimes this works,
but not always.
Any ideas, please? I will be really grateful as I use this facility a lot,
either to save paper by printing Minutes etc 2 pages per sheet, or in order
to creat A5 booklets, when I use the printer dialogue to print e.g. pages
8,1,2,7,6,3,4,5 etc.
Thanks.
William
