Problems opening and closing PST files

I have quite a lot of mail I need to search infrequently, so I've
split it into a dozen or so 500Mb PST files. The old "Lookout" tool
worked a charm, but on upgrading my machine I've got problems opening
and closing PST files.

I've got two archives permanently loaded, I can happilly browse and
search them, but can't close them - getting the error "The operation
failed. An object could not be found."

Which wouldn't be a big problem it itself, but for Lookout to index
all the PST archives it needs them all open at the same time, and I'm
limited to only opening two other PST's, and on trying to open
subsquent ones get the error "Out of memory or system resources. Close
some windows or programs and try again". The machine has 2Gb RAM which
might be the limiting factor, but my previous machine could open
countless PSTs at the same time, and it had only 1Gb.

Any ideas?

Alternatively if I could import my historic PSTs into another tool, or
into gmail or similar, I'd happilly use that to search the older
archives, but that doesn't seem a straightforward process at the
moment.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm using Outlook 2003 on XP
