Problems Publishing a pdf File

I installed Office 2007 a month ago and was using the "Publish as PDF" in
Publisher with beautiful results! Then, I took the same file, made some
changes and now when I "Publish as PDF" the graphics that had transparent
backgrounds now have black backgrounds.
I finally discovered the difference! In Adobe Reader v9 which was on there
all along, clicking File/Properties on the first file says that PDF Producer
is "Office Publisher 2007". The PDF version is "1.5 (Acrobat 6.x)". The pdf
file that is messing up has the PDF version as "1.4 (Acrobat 5.x)".
Since publishing the 1st file, I've installed my scanner software (older),
Lumapix Fotofusion and TNT (an old screen capture program). Apparently
something overwrote whatever Office was using to publish the pdf's.
I reinstalled Office over the top of existing and that didn't work. I blew
off Adobe 9 and reinstalled and that didn't work. Argggg!
Anybody got any ideas? I'm running Vista with MS Office Small Business 2007.

In addition, Publisher has always had problems with transparency. This can be
very apparent when converting to PDF. The workaround is to select the
transparent object, right-click, save as a picture, select .png. Re-insert into
Publisher.

I will probably have to do that. The first time I used the pdf generator in
Publisher it was beautiful! I just wish I knew how to get that version back!

The first time I used the Publish PDF the transparent graphics were perfect!
And they were .png files that I created in Paint Shop Pro. There were a
couple that were Publisher clipart files.

Do you have the Office 2007 *save as PDF* add-in installed? Are you saying
Publisher is automatically using your Acrobat program to create the PDF?

Yes. I've only had my Office 2007 for about a month. When I initially
installed it, it already had the "Publish as PDF or XPS" feature installed
(on the File menu). I created my first newsletter, including transparent png
files, and published as pdf and it did beautifully.
I took the same newsletter, made changes this month, and published and all
the png files had black backgrounds.
It was only after investigating the two files that I discovered when I was
in the Adobe 9.0 reader that I could go File/Properties and discover that the
good file had:
PDF Producer: Microsoft Publisher 2007
PDF Version: 1.5 (Acrobat 6.x)
and the bad file had:
PDF Producer: same
PDF Version: 1.6 (Acrobat 6.x)
Sometime between the two publishings I installed something that overwrote
what MSPublisher is using to produce the files and I can't figure out how to
get it back the way it was. :-(

I suggest you forego the Publish as a PDF option in the File menu and use the
save as. I never use the Publish as a PDF, I either use the Adobe PDF printer or
the Save As.

Have you changed any of the PDF options? (i.e. the button below the
'type' drop-down marked "Change")

Have you changed the colour space from RGB to CMYK?

When it was working, I saw that there was a commercial setting. I may have
set it to that initially but saw that the file size was bigger. I really
didn't need it to be That clear. I ended up putting it on the high quality
printing setting and it was beautiful.

I did end up installing PrimoPDF and it works. Odd thing, though. When I
checked the properties of that file, it said it was produced by Primo and the
pdf version was 1.3 (Acrobat 4.x)... even earlier!! So maybe that doesn't
have anything to do with the problem. I don't know. The quality of the pdf is
not as good as it was with Publish as PDF.

Oh well, thanks everybody for your help. If I run across the solution I'll
post it.
