publisher 98

The file size of my 4 page newsletter created with
Publisher 98 (I am using the supplied template or wizard
called "Blends") jumps from 165 KB with no photos to
17,000 KB with 6 photos added. I have sized the photos
and checked their file size in Photo Editor - they add up
to 476 KB when I look in Windows Explorer.
I've had this problem repeatedly with newsletters. Thanks
in advance for any suggestions.

"This is quite normal, as Publisher converts all bitmapped image formats to
uncompressed bitmaps when you insert them into a Publisher document. It
would appear from the unusually large files, the size of your pictures are
in too high a resolution (DPI). A maximum of 150dpi and in most cases 100dpi
colored photographs are more than sufficient. For more info:

This has been addressed in Publisher 2002/2003 with better graphic
compression."

This is a known issue with Publisher 2000 and below
Publisher handles all pictures as uncompressed bitmaps, no matter how they
were imported.
Publisher 2002 and 2003 progressively get better with this issue, saving
images in the format in which they were imported, or a lossless PNG format,
whichever gives the smaller filesize.
