I have outlook form Office XP running on Windows XP. I
had a hard drive error and can access data, but can not
boot up from the drive. I would like to recover my
address book and e-mails saved on the hard drive. Does
anyone know the file extentions I need? I don't have
eithe *.pst of *.ost.

Thank you in advance, any and all help is appreciated.

Did you enable searching hidden and system files? Try that and you should
be able to find your .pst file (.ost files are from an offline Exchange
service.)

I tried that previously, but it didn't work.
Unfortunately I did not back up the data from outlook
before the hard drive error. I read something on the
knowledge base that indicated that PST files are converted
to data files? Does that have anything to do with this
issue?

Thanks,

Your easiest option is to take the HDD out of the machine and install it as
a slave in another.

Do you know the name of the files I will be looking to
open? I can create the slave relationship, but I will
need to open the file. Also, does this present an issue
with the username permissions?

Thanks

if you were running a stand-alone Outlook, then your mail etc will be in a
file called Outlook.pst or similar - the extension will be pst in any case.

You might have to take ownership of the file before you can do anything with
it.
