Try pressing Ctrl+Shift+8. This turns off the display of nonprinting marks.
Note, however, that if you explicitly selected to show some of the
formatting marks in Tools | Options, View tab (or in Office button | Word
Options, Display category, under the "Always show these formatting marks on
