Repetitive outgoing emails

I send emails which stay in my outbox as if unsent. While this continues the
message is in fact being sent out on every send / receive cycle with
recipients being bombarded with the same message. The only way I identify it
is when recipients call to complain, in which case I go into the outbox and
delete the message. Having done this there is nothing to show the message was
sent as it does not then show in 'sent items' as a sent message.
This does not happen all the time - maybe one in ten outgoing messages are
affected this way. The first time it happened was after I was on the
receiving end of a similar problem. I have done full virus checks and there
are no viruses in my system.
