Request task status using collaboration without Project Server

How do you request task status without Project Server in Project 2002? I set
"Collaborate using:" to Email only and added email addresses to the
resources, but when the email is set, it emails an attachment MSPJ.MTM which
can't be opened. Is there something else I need to change?
