Resource overallocation

Hi,

I have some issue with my resources.
I create a schedule, tasks, assign resources and publish it.
I have one task A with 4hours duration. If my resource report 4h of
work, all goes fine.
If my resource report more than 4h, 6h for example, he got
overallocated and duration keeps the same.
Should the duration not keep constant and change it to 6h and not
overallocate my resource?
I try it using with fixed units with and without effort driven and I
got the same result.

Thanks a lot.

Your resource probably has other work scheduled in the same timeframe.
The golden rule is:

Work=Units x Duration
One of these is fixed.

I sent you a PDF file that has a chart in it to the gmail address of your
name. The chart shows what will happen as you fix and change these units.
You want to see slide 23 which summarizes the first 23 slides.

If you feel it helped, please rate my response.

I think this is not my problem
Let me try to explain again:
After reporting 6h of work in a task (duration:4h),Project
Professional updates the schedule and change the reource units to 200%
and my resource got overallocated.
And resource hasn´t any other work scheduled in the same timeframe.
So the problem is:
I used fixed units and the resource units changed, but not the
duration. I think duration should go to 6h, shouldn't it?

Thanks again

Yes, the duration should change and the resource units should hold constant.
However, sometimes you get the little green triangle that asks you the
question something like: "You just increased the work on a task. Select one
of the following:
(a) Increase the duration so the task will take longer
(b) Increase the hours resources work so the task will take the same amount
of time.

If you selected the (b) option, it will remember this every time you change
the work on that task.

If you want to correct this, select fixed work and set it to 6 hours.
Change the duration of the task as well. Then, change it back to fixed units.

I think there may be more going on here than meets the eye. A task that is
100% Units and 4 hours work cannot go to 200% units with a 50% increase in
duration.

If you want, pop me an e-mail by hitting reply to the e-mail I sent to your
gmail account this morning. Attach the file and I'll take a look. It's
about 4PM here now (California) so I may not get it until mid-day Tuesday
since I will be out tomorrow AM and can't check that e-mail.

Work and Duration are different things to Project. Duration is interpreted
to be work days ... for example 40 hours in 1 week.

Work is the amount of effort that will be needed to complete the task. For
example, I need 4 hours of work sometime in the next 2 days. Duration is 2
days, Work=4 hours. Assuming a 40 hour week at 8 hours per day, units will
be 4/16=25%
