ruler not accurate

Bonnie

Hello,

Can someone tell me if you know, why the ruler in the form design screen is
not accurate. When I hold an actual ruler up to it - an inch on the real
ruler lines up to about a half in on the screen. Also, do you know how to
change it?

Thanks in advance.

The display on screen *depends* on how big the monitor you are using. On a
15-inch monitor, 1 inch will be a lot shorter than 1 inch on a 22-inch
monitor.

I can't recall what the technical term is but the calibration of the ruler
is more aligned with the measurement when you print and not the actual
display on the monitor.

So what setting can I play with to make it actual size?

Your resolution settings and your DPI settings.

To what point though? If something fits on your screen it fits on your screen.
This gives you a ballpark estimate of what will fit on other user's screens, but
since you can't know or control what video settings those users have then
getting your ruler's "inch" to match up with an actual ruler's inch is of little
practical value.

You have a ruler, why do you want a screen ruler?

I think if you can set a custom paper size then you can do it that way.

If 10" on your ruler = X inches on the screen then make your paper 10/X
times bigger/smaller.

Well, yes and no. It's okay on some of my other girl's screens but we are
viewing tif images in the MODI and would like, for production purposes, to
see the image at actual (8.5 x 11) which is legible and cuts down on
scrolling around with the mouse. The monitors are 20" and it works quite
well on most machines but on one particular PC the image is large so as to
cut down on production. I think the graphics card may be part of the issue
on this machine too. Even when I change the dpi and resolution I don't see
any change in the image size. On several other machines it's fine. Just
trying to understand. I do have to say though, what's the point of a ruler
on the screen if it's all over the place.

Thanks ya'll.

One way to solve your problem is to fit monitors where the on-screen ruler
is slightly too long and shrink the image to match a real ruler using the
adjustment buttons on the monitor.

The Ruler on screen is only for PRINTING
