I saved an email to my OneNote. Now every time OneNote starts, it crashes. I
deleted the email but the tool or the underlying data file still seems to be
corrupted.

Is there a way for me to fix this without losing everything I've previously
put into OneNote? I've put a lot of work info in, and really don't want to
lose it all.

Thanks for any help you can give!

First, you can try clearing out the OneNote cache. Note that this will
discard any unsynced changes, so you might want to skip this step if you
were working offline for a while before OneNote started crashing. The
cache is located in "c:\documents and settings\<username>\local
settings\application data\microsoft\onenote\12.0". Go in there and
delete OneNoteOfflineCache.onecache, and see if that fixes the problem.

If not, please send in an error report and post the bucket number for
the crash. You can locate the bucket number by going to the event log
(under administrative tools in the control panel), expanding the
Application events category, and looking for the information event from
the error reporting service around the time you sent in the error report.

Thanks, Ilya.

I cleared the cache, but it didn't change anything. The bucket numbers for
these crashes are 1000 (most of them), and 258 (a few). I also saw a couple
of 1053's. No explanation given, of course. Do these indicate something I
should do to get ON2007 running again?

These look too small to be bucket numbers. The bucket number will be in
the text of the event (doubleclick to open it, and it'll say something
like "Fault bucket XXX")

I don't think the problem is in the executable software or accompanying
downloaded dll's, because I uninstalled OneNote, reloaded it across the
internet, and reinstalled it. Still crashed.

Under the assumption that the problem was in the notebook files themselves,
yesterday I wiped out everything under the "onenote notebooks" folder (i.e.,
all my notebooks), and began copying the notebooks back in one at a time from
a directory to which I'd copied them after the first crash. My theory was
that it would crash after I copied in the offending notebook. However, it
worked for every one of them right through the last one.

Thought I had it licked, but today when I started onenote it immediately
crashed again.

Any help is appreciated! Here's the event files from today's crash in their
entirety, copied from the event-log admin tool as you suggested (I never saw
any info about a failure bucket):

It appears that you haven't yet installed Office 2007 SP1. The service
pack contains a number of fixes, one of which might resolve the
crashing. I'll also see if I can track down the specific error report
from the details you provided.

I had a similar problem with OneNote crashing shortly after starting
it up. I resolved the issue by uprading to Office SP1 ... thanks for
the suggestion!

On my PC, deleting the cache solved the problem, too.

If you changed the default place for the OneNote file, don't forget to look up the cache in that folder.

And new version is now creating folder with the name instead of 12.0, 14.0 or above.

Thank you for the solution!
